NSPCC Exhibition: A Safer Tomorrow

Earlier this month, the Grimsby minster hosted "A Safer Tomorrow" an art exhibition created by the NSPCC with help from students of Delta Trust Primary schools; Macaulay, Weelsby & Strand.

The idea grew from a small conversation between one of the parents from Macaulay Academy and NSPCC 'Together for Childhood' social worker Dannie Adcock-Habib, during a family activity session at the school. The parent works for a company called 'Images' which specialises in facilitating exhibitions and art galleries for children at primary schools across the country.

"Your favourite place in Grimsby, in 20 years time" was the inspirational prompt for the children's art, making for lots of interesting depictions of flying cars, local parks and of course plenty of Dock Towers.

This idea of a simple exhibition quickly grew into a huge collaboration project for the town, involving 3 different primary schools and around 750 children! The gallery was so large that Grimsby minster hosted the paintings, allowing parents and children from each of the schools to visit and appreciate their work in a welcoming communal space like the minster.

Typically these events act as fundraisers, raising money for varying causes through the sale of the paintings & frames for the parents and children who want to take their art home. However the wholesome nature of the event doesn't stop there, myenergi and the National Lottery Heritage Fund came together to pay for ALL of the paintings & frames meaning every single child could take their painting home!

Speaking to Dannie she had this to say: "The children were so excited to take their art home. I loved watching them talk about their art, thinking about their hopes and aspirations for the future as well as celebrating the local area. I think the project brought the community together to hear what children are telling us, to celebrate them and ensure they feel significant in the place they live."

The students also got to visit the exhibition via buses & coaches (thanks to the NSPCC and Cleethorpes Rotary club), a large majority of the children had never even been inside the Grimsby minster so many were daunted by the imposing structure. Thankfully once inside all the children's fears were dispelled by the friendly staff and awe-inspiring décor of the minster, as well as seeing their own work featured as part of an art gallery.

Overall the exhibition was a huge success with so many local organisations, schools & parents collaborating to validate and inspire the next generation of Grimbarians!
