Festival of the Sea Grimsby - 2023

Festival of the Sea returned for its 3rd year running in the middle of July, kickstarting a busy summer of events for Grimsby, showing off various local talent with live music & shows, food stalls, arts & craft, workshops and so much more!

Previous years have seen thousands of visitors take part in the days activities and markets. This year wasn't much different except for new festival partners Swans Events who worked alongside a panel of Grimbarians, passionate about local history and community spirit, to programme the day's events.

Hosted by talented local comedian Lauren Smith, the bandstand offered the main source of entertainment with performances by the East Marsh United Choir, Nukuleles Ukulele Band and The Aquatic Mermaids Family Gameshow! There were also performances elsewhere at the festival from Lowercase Theatre & Masala Masters as well as Cap'n Fishcake and His Fabulous Fish Fingers! Just some of the other organisations involved included Our Big Picture taking inspiration from the "Friends, Foes and Good Companions" gallery at the Fishing Heritage Centre (Check out our Grimbarian article on the exhibition!), Freestyle Academy's Sea Soundscape workshop and James the Canoe River Cleaner.

On top of all these great activities and performances, the market stalls showcased some incredible independent businesses of all kinds, selling items from locally sourced sea glass jewellery to framed photographs of 1980's Grimsby Docks and paintings by Francesca Young. There are too many great local people involved, as well as visitors to town, to be listed here but you can check out the Festival of the Sea's website for a full timetable/itinerary of the days events.

The Festival of the Sea was unfortunately faced with a thunderstorm towards the end of the day, ironically giving everyone a true wet & windy fisherman's experience! Organisers and those taking part acted quickly and implemented a show-stop procedure at 3pm, merely 2 hours before the end of the festival.

Produced by Swans Events, this project is funded by the UK government’s Levelling Up agenda. Also supported using public funding by Arts Council England with a big thank you to sponsor Ørsted.

Once again Festivals and events like this show just how much Grimsby has to offer; the community spirit, creative performances, our deeply cherished maritime heritage and all the industrious groups looking to improve the town for everyone, in any way they can!
