Good News from the East Marsh Part Two

Part 2

At East Marsh United (EMU), the first half of the year has seen a flurry of activity across key projects. It’s a pleasure to bring you Good News from the Marsh.

Kitchen Table Drop-In

EMU has been hosting a weekly drop-in since 2021, and that too is undergoing transformation. Carolyn and Sue (yes, they are very busy) host the Kitchen Table Drop-In, where East Marsh residents can stop by for a cuppa and a chat. Regular attendees, Dee and Macey, are now offering sessions in craft and well-being, too.

The Kitchen Table is going to be mobile over the summer and will be popping up in places other than our usual base on Freeman Street Market.

If anyone would like to drop in, you can find us in the Sun and Moon Room in the Courtyard at Freeman Street Market every Tuesday between 1pm and 3pm.

Housing

In 2022, EMU presented a Community Share Offer - an ethical investment - and raised £500,000 to buy and refurbish homes on the East Marsh.  The housing project is a way to tackle rogue landlords and provide safe and affordable homes for families.  A safe home in a happy neighbourhood should be everybody’s right and EMU is working hard on another transformational project to make meaningful and lasting change.  Our ambition is to own 100 House for 100 Years so that even when our current team have moved into the great blue yonder, there is a real legacy of positive social change for future generations. We currently own eight houses and are looking at scaling up the project to bring empty homes back into use, and to take over homes from absentee and rogue landlords who operate out of greed and sow nothing but despair and misery for tenants.

We are delighted to welcome our new Community-Led Housing Officer to our team, Paula Graves. Paula says:

“I am passionate about supporting people, working in communities and helping to make a difference, no matter how small.  I have qualifications as an Early Years Assessor, IAG Advisor and in Leadership and Management and have worked with communities for 20 plus years.”

That’s all for now. We’ll be back later in the year with more good news. In the meantime, remember, if you want to see change happen; only you can make it happen. There are no knights on horseback, only us.
