Grimsby's Historic Cup Run

Grimsby Town Football Club had an heroic FA Cup run this season, making history to become the first club in the tournament to beat five teams from higher divisions.

After scoring a victory against Premier League side Southampton 2-1, The Mariners made it to the final eight in the competition, the first time the team has reached this position in 84 years.

This historic moment made the national news, with all eyes on Grimsby Town, its fans, and schools of Harry the Haddock. Good Morning Britain, the Guardian, and ESPN all positively reported on the occasion.

GTFC’s FA Cup run came to an end when the team were defeated 5-0 by Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion. Over 4,600 fans travelled to the American Express Community Stadium on the south coast to support the team, with chants, cheers, and applause continuing to celebrate the Mariners well after the match had ended.

Speaking to Mariners TV and BBC Radio Humberside, Manager Paul Hurst said: “It’s fantastic for everyone involved with the Club, we’ve said that many times going into the game. Today, for me most of the best bits have been at the end and that is strange because we’ve just had a defeat and we’ve come up against a fantastic team, but the fans at the end make it really special and that’s what you always talk about. The support that they gave the team right throughout, even though it became obvious we weren’t going to win the game, it was a very nice moment.”
