Grimsby Falcons' Charity Match

This town is well known for its football team, but did you know that Grimsby's Ice Hockey scene is surprisingly big and still growing? I spoke to Grimsby Falcons' Ross Smith (who has been playing Ice Hockey for the last 12 years and helped found the team in 2018) about an upcoming charity match at the Grimsby Ice Rink this September.

There are 4 Men's teams; Falcons, Ice Bears, Lightnings and Stormers, also a Women's team; Wolves as well as a kids club for under 12s and under 21s. All playing out of the Grimsby Ice Rink at the Leisure Centre, with the nearest alternatives being Hull or Sheffield, technically the Ice Rink is the only one in Lincolnshire.

On the 16th of September, The Falcons will be hosting a charity match at the Grimsby Ice Rink, raising money for Flag Grimsby. The event will be free to attend with donations welcome, all proceeds will be going directly to the charity. The teams, a mix of Falcons and Wolves, will be facing off at 1pm for a set of 3x 20 minute periods. People are advised to arrive early for the raffle and cake stall before the hockey players get their hands on them!

As well as a raffle and cake stall, there will also be a separate raffle for a Team GB hockey stick which even the players will be after. Last year the Falcons managed to raise £1,200 for Mind, they're hoping to raise even more this time round.

"The inaugural charity game was last year, we decided to raise money for Mind as many people will know how much mental health takes its toll on people, especially because of the covid lockdowns, our players have lost people may it be friends or family through mental health, so we wanted to pay back to Mind who help as many as they can. This year we are raising money for Flag Grimsby who are a charity that provides children with disabilities and special needs with a range of recreational activities." - Ross Smith, Event Organiser & Falcons Player

For anyone interested in the sport, whether playing or watching, the Ice Hockey community has plenty of opportunities to watch and even to learn how to play. One such opportunity is a beginner session on a Saturday morning which is run by an experienced coach who has been in the game over 30 years.
