Grimsby's Karaoke Queen

Grimsby Mum Ellie Butler impressed judges at the World Karaoke Championships in Panama this year, winning the competition! Although a singer by trade, frequently performing at events like 80s nights and weddings, she managed to beat other contestants from around the world in the competition.

The Karaoke World Championships were founded in Finland in 2003 and have held live stage performances annually ever since (excluding 20/21 during the covid pandemic, when it was hosted online). The competition is an opportunity for aspiring singers to show their amazing talents to the world and to give the crowd an unforgettable experience.

Ellie, who lives with her seven-year-old son Riley, first got involved with the contest in April. "I saw a post on social media and you had to submit a video of yourself singing". She said: "When I entered this competition, it was advertised as an event for any unsigned singers. Being one myself, I decided to enter, but I never thought anything would come of it. I sent a number of videos of me singing before I eventually made it to the UK Finals."

After winning the UK Finals it was off to Panama where Ellie would face off against some of the world's best unsigned singers in her solo artist category. "There was nothing Karaoke about this competition because everyone could sing.. I was not expecting the talent, it was phenomenal".

"My winning song was Jennifer Hudson's version of The Impossible Dream, I felt it was a really appropriate song for if I got into the final". Ellie also sang 'Stay With Me Baby' by Ruby Turner and the Prince classic 'Purple Rain'. All artists are judged according to things like range, skill, timing, expressiveness, confidence etc. and Ellie managed to ace the criteria, smashing her performances out of the park. She is also looking for sponsors to expand the competition in the UK.

Congratulations to Ellie for winning the competition and for representing both the United Kingdom and Grimsby on the world stage for what must have been an impossible dream; come true!
