Grimbarians - Single

Dale Mackie

Along Garibaldi Street in Grimsby, you will spot a true conversation-starting mural. A wall that is over 77ft long and 20ft tall that has been painted to depict some of the East Marsh’s most iconic buildings. The Great Wall of Grimsby, as it is known, is a part of the collaborative Paint the Town Proud project, and the Lead Artist is Grimbarian, Dale Mackie.

Born and raised in Cleethorpes, Dale loved art in school, but it wasn’t until 20 years later at the age 36 when he enrolled on his first art course. He studied at Wintringham, the School of Art in Eleanor Street, and at the Hull School of Art and Design where, after six years of part-time study while working full-time, he gained his B.A. Hons Degree in Fine Art. Dale carefully refined his craft and discovered his distinctive contemporary artistic style.

For 10 years, Dale was the resident artist at Grimsby’s Abbey Walk Gallery, up until its closure. He moved his work to the New Street Studios in Grimsby Town Centre, where he still paints today, as well as at his latest studio space in the historic heart of Grimsby Docks, the Kasbah.

With the continuing redevelopment of the Kasbah as a creative space, Dale has become ABP’s official resident artist of the Docks, and will remain so for the next two years. He is currently working on pieces that will feature in an upcoming exhibition depicting the past, present, and future of the Port of Grimsby.

Much of Dale’s inspiration derives from the town’s historic fishing industry, saying: “I have always painted the Docks, using old black and white photos and finding historic images and information on the internet or from local people. Most of the population around here have worked on the docks, or have family who have worked on the docks, and people enjoy reminiscing about it.

“It’s the same with the Garibaldi Street Mural. People who would watch us paint it would stop and share memories. There is so much interest and we get so many comments, people asking us to include family members’ names. I tried but we can’t include them all. And that is what I wanted for the mural, something for people to react to in a good way.”

The Great Wall of Grimsby mural and the Paint the Town Proud project is bringing impactful, visual, heritage-driven artwork into the community. It is a collaboration between Dale, as the Lead Artist of the Garibaldi Street mural, Creative START CIC, The Culture House, Nomad Remote Digital Studio and Hammond House, with support from fellow artists and numerous volunteers. Dale’s design depicts scenes of the East Marsh, creating a montage that pieces together buildings from across Freeman Street, Riby Square, and of course the Docks.

Dale has now been a practicing artist for nearly 30 years and his work has been exhibited locally as well as across Lincolnshire, Nottingham, Sheffield, and York. You can see more from Dale at dalemackie.com.
