Abbie Dewhurst

As you sit down with a cup of tea in the morning, evening or nightime, you may spot Abbie Dewhurst presenting the daily weather forecasts across BBC Look North.

 After growing up in the Grimsby area, Abbie used her determination and talent to secure experience at local and national radio and TV Stations, and took part in the Diana Award – Diana, Princess of Wales’ charity legacy that inspires and empower young people. When not presenting, you can catch Abbie on her YouTube channel, ‘Confessions of a Weather Girl’ and on social media.


At what moment did you realise that you wanted to be a Presenter?


Ever since I was little, I always loved to be in the spotlight whether through a local theatre group or just putting on a show for my family in the lounge. When it came to choosing a career path (which is one of the weirdest things you do in life!), I just knew I wanted to do something different. What that meant I didn’t really know. I was fascinated with TV and Radio and how people could make a living just from talking – it seemed like the perfect job for me. It wasn’t until I approached a local production company, East Coast Pictures, and asked for some work experience and insight into the industry and Julia Thompson, the Executive Producer told me she was looking for a presenter, that I thought – BINGO, I can do that!

You’ve covered a lot of various events in the Grimsby area in your career so far, what was your favourite?


I gave a talk to a group called Work Wise Women all about my career relatively recently and a lot of the women in the audience I had a personal connection with – one being Julia, who I mentioned earlier. She ended up playing a huge part in my career so it was really nice for her to be there and fully understand how much of an impact she had had. I also really like giving a bit of an insight (and an honest one at that) into the world of TV and Radio as so many people have a warped perception of what it’s like.


How has growing up in the Grimsby area influenced your career?


I think it’s made it a bit tougher for me in my chosen career path because it’s not exactly the media hub of the country but in saying that, I’m far more grateful for what I do and 100% certain it is the right path for me as it took me so long and was such a hard graft to finally land the position I have. It’s also made me realise that you don’t have to hot foot it to London or Manchester in order to have a successful career. I appreciate doing my job for my home town so much more because of all the connections I have and I’m so lucky that I didn’t have to move a million miles away from friends and family.


Where is your favourite place to visit when you come back to Grimsby and why?


I love going to Cleethorpes beach – the fitties end – and walking my dog with my family. I have so many fond memories of doing this and can remember really specific times in my life from that one spot.


Would you rather have sunny skies every day or skies full of stars every night?

Sunny skies – everyone is so much happier when the sun is shining!


Would you rather an unlimited first class ticket or never have to pay for anything in restaurants?


Unlimited first class – I’m lucky enough to have a sister who is cabin crew and have therefore tasted life as the other half live…wow!


What’s next on the cards for you?


Literally, I’m about to put some make up on, take my rollers out and do the late 10:25 weather forecast. In a more general sense, I really don’t know and that is exciting! Since I was 17 and about to leave school my life has been always concentrating on ‘what’s next, what now’ and I’m at a very happy and content point in my life where I’m quite enjoying staying still and taking in the here and now. Not only that but there are so many amazing opportunities coming out of my current position, no two days are the same and I am always busy – I don’t have time to think about what’s next so we’ll all just have to wait and see!
