Austin Mitchell

For 37 years, Austin Mitchell served as MP for the Great Grimsby constituency.


Austin, who was born and raised in Yorkshire, began his career in the House of Commons following time in Academics, both as a student and a University Lecturer in New Zealand. He also became a successful Broadcast Journalist for the BBC and ITV’s Yorkshire Television, as well as an author.


In 1977, Austin secured his seat in the House of Commons as Great Grimsby’s Labour MP and held various positions including Shadow Spokesperson on Trade & Industry, and Opposition Whip. He also served on the committees for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and the Treasury & Civil Service. 

Following his retirement from British Politics, Austin produced a short film entitled ‘GREAT Grimsby’ with his family, which showcased the many positives of his adopted home town. Well-known local names including Strictly Come Dancing professionals Kevin & Joanne Clifton, motorsport racer Guy Martin and actress Patricia Hodge were featured. His continuing involvement in the area makes Austin Mitchell an honorary Grimbarian.
