Steve Burton
With over 38 years of dedicated service, Steven Burton is one of the most experienced and longstanding members of the RNLI Cleethorpes crew.
Now 62, Steve plays a vital leadership role as a Launch Authority, making the crucial decisions to send the lifeboat crew into action. His responsibilities don’t stop there—he also serves as a tractor driver and visits officer, helping with both the operations the public-facing side of the station.
Steve’s connection to the sea goes back to his earliest days. Growing up by the Cleethorpes seafront, he was involved in a rescue at just 13 years old while out on the pier—an experience that would shape his future. A life spent on boats and beaches made joining the RNLI a natural path. So when the Cleethorpes lifeboat station was first built in 1986, Steve didn’t hesitate to get involved. Nearly four decades later, he’s still at the heart of the crew.
For many years, Steve served as helm, leading crews out on shouts and overseeing complex rescues on the water. Today, while his main focus is coordination and support, his hands-on experience remains a guiding force for younger volunteers.
In addition to his operational roles, Steve is passionate about community outreach. As the station’s visits officer, he regularly hosts school groups and youth organisations, delivering talks and sharing the RNLI’s lifesaving mission with the next generation. His knowledge and storytelling bring the service to life, inspiring young minds and building awareness of sea safety.
Steve’s long-standing dedication and deep local roots have made him a pillar of the RNLI Cleethorpes team. His leadership, experience, and commitment continue to shape the station’s legacy—and its future.
