Elaine is one of the people quietly helping shape a greener, more connected Grimsby. As Chair of Grimsby In Bloom and a director of the CIC, her passion for nature, community and sustainability runs through everything the organisation does.
What began back in 2004 has grown into a multi-award-winning project that has become a hugely important part of the town’s community spirit, encouraging people to take pride in the places around them while reconnecting with nature at the same time.
Since taking over the Pavilion in the Duke of York Gardens in 2018, Grimsby In Bloom has continued to grow from strength to strength. Under the guidance of a dedicated team of volunteers, the organisation has transformed the space into a welcoming hub centred around horticulture, wellbeing and bringing people together. Their work has earned widespread recognition, including a Silver Gilt award in Britain in Bloom, multiple Gold awards in East Midlands in Bloom, the Civic Award for the Grimsby area, and repeated Level 5 “Outstanding” awards in the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood programme.
For Elaine, though, the awards are never the main focus. At the heart of Grimsby In Bloom is a simple ethos: to work sustainably and encourage others to think differently about nature, biodiversity and the environment around them. Whether that’s through planting schemes, habitat creation or community projects, the aim is always to work with nature rather than against it. Supporting wildlife, insects and local ecosystems is a huge part of that mission, helping create spaces that benefit both people and the environment alike.
Nature and being outdoors are central to Elaine’s life and the lives of the wider team. “Without this,” she explains, “I feel that we would be very unhappy in our everyday life.” That genuine love for the outdoors is reflected in the atmosphere around Grimsby In Bloom’s projects. They are spaces designed not just to look beautiful, but to help people feel better, calmer and more connected to the world around them.
The most rewarding part for Elaine is seeing people outside, whether they are working, relaxing or simply enjoying the spaces with a smile on their face. That sense of shared enjoyment and community pride is what drives the organisation forward. Looking ahead, the ambition is to become fully financially sustainable, reducing reliance on external funding while continuing to grow their impact across the town. Elaine and the team also hope to support other groups with advice and guidance, sharing what they have learned over the years to help more community projects flourish.
At its core, Grimsby In Bloom is about far more than flowers or gardening. It is about creating spaces where people feel connected, valued and proud of where they live. Through the dedication of Elaine and the wider team, those small acts of care and planting are helping shape a greener, kinder and more hopeful future for Grimsby.
